The music reflects the moodiness of Radiohead, the vocal and orchestral style of Florence and the Machine and the playful and rhythmic piano techniques of Regina Spektor. Her music can be classified as melancholic, theatrical and ethereal, dabbling in genres such as dream pop, dark ambient, Neoclassical Dark Wave and both electronic and orchestral.
“you get solo artists that completely flout the rule book and create music of grandiose and complex proportions. This is the case with Martinique du Toit, who goes by the moniker of Matinino” – Shawn Phillips
Martinique du Toit started playing piano at the age of five and started writing music for vocals and piano at the age of 10. She recieved classical piano and vocal training from a young age and since then she has been involved in numerous creative projects and bands. This variety of musical projects taught Martinique diversity in her writing as well as the ability to use numerous techniques in her performance style such as utilizing looppedals to create harmonies live as well as self-made backtracks using vocal noises, piano and experimental sounds
In 2015 Matinino did numerous shows in Groningen, Holland where she stayed for three months. Since then she has worked with Shawn Phillips, Jacques Jigglesworth (Mr Cat and the Jackal), and Kamil Govender; who produces all Matinino’s music.
